Motorcyclist Killed in Early Morning Crash

According to a report by WRIC in Richmond, Virginia, a motorcyclist has died as a result of a fatal big rig accident along Interstate 95 in Fredericksburg. Police working the accident indicated that the motorcyclist “ran off the roadway and hit the rear” of a big rig that was reportedly stopped improperly on the freeway. Although it is not known why the truck was stopped or how the motorcyclist ran off the road, the driver of the tractor trailer has been charged with improperly stopping on the highway.

While it is unclear how many motorcyclists are killed each year in big rig accidents, there were over 4,000 people killed in crashes involving large trucks in 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Seventy-four percent of people killed in large truck crashes were occupants or passengers of other vehicles. Likewise, nearly 5,000 motorcyclists were killed in 2015, an eight percent from 2014.
